Little Juniata River
Big wild browns in a limestone river you can walk a rail-trail along.
The Little Juniata — known universally as the Little J — runs from the Bald Eagle ridge near Tyrone east to its confluence with the Frankstown Branch near Petersburg. It is a freestone river by character but limestone-influenced through much of its productive reach, which keeps temperatures cool and biomass high.
Twenty-plus miles of the river hold a wild brown trout population dense enough that PFBC manages it as Class A Wild Trout water and manages 13.7 miles from Ironville to the mouth as Catch and Release All Tackle.
